Australian eBike law

Simple public-road reference

Most public-road eBike rules come back to the same practical checks: 250W continuous rated power, pedal assistance, motor cut-off at 25km/h and bicycle road rules.

State / territory Simple public-road reference
NSW Pedal-assisted eBikes must assist only while pedalling and cut assistance at 25km/h. NSW currently allows up to 500W continuous power, moving to 250W from 1 March 2029.
VIC 250W maximum continuous rated power, pedal assist only, assistance cut-off at 25km/h. Throttle/walk mode only up to 6km/h.
QLD 250W maximum continuous rated power, pedal powered with motor assistance up to 25km/h, throttle only up to 6km/h, EN 15194 compliance labelling rules apply.
WA Legal eBikes are generally 200W power-assisted pedal cycles or EN 15194 pedelecs up to 250W, with assistance cut-off at 25km/h.
SA Legal options include 200W power-assisted pedal cycles or 250W electrically power-assisted cycles, with motor output reducing above 6km/h and cutting off at 25km/h.
TAS Legal options include 200W auxiliary-motor bicycles or 250W EPAC eBikes, with assistance reducing above 6km/h and cutting off at 25km/h.
ACT Legal EPAC eBikes are 250W maximum continuous rated power, EN 15194 compliant, with assistance cut-off at 25km/h and start assistance up to 6km/h.
NT Public-space eBikes must be maximum 250W and speed limited to 25km/h.
