How to choose an eBike trailer in Australia
A trailer can make a bike more useful, but it also changes the way the bike handles. Start with the passenger or load, then confirm the towing setup before you buy.
1. Choose the right trailer type
Child trailers
Choose a child trailer when you want the child carried behind the bike rather than on the bike frame or rear rack. Look at the number of seats, child weight limit, child height limit, harnessing, weather cover, stroller function and how easy it is to load the child calmly.
- Traveller: a simpler two-child trailer and stroller setup for everyday use.
- Outback Next One: a more refined one-child setup where comfort and suspension are higher priorities.
Dog trailers
Choose a dog trailer when your dog should not run beside the bike, cannot keep up for the full ride, or needs an enclosed, stable space. Measure the dog sitting and lying down. The trailer needs enough internal room, ventilation and an entry your dog can use without stress.

Cargo trailers
Choose a cargo trailer when the job is groceries, gear, packages, tools or bulky daily loads. Do not use cargo trailers for passengers. Check the allowed load, the platform size, how items are secured and how the loaded trailer affects braking and turning.

2. Check fit before ordering
The trailer is only one half of the setup. The bike also needs to suit towing. Check the rear axle or hitch point, frame clearance, brake condition, tyre pressure, loaded weight and where the trailer will be used. If the bike uses a non-standard axle or rear-end layout, ask before ordering.

3. Match the trailer to real use
- School runs: prioritise child comfort, quick loading, weather cover, visibility and controlled riding pace.
- Weekend family rides: think about shade, luggage space, child limits and whether stroller mode matters at the destination.
- Dogs: start with dog size and temperament. A good trailer still needs patient training before longer rides.
- Cargo: plan around the heaviest likely load, not the average one. Secure the load so it cannot shift.

5. Common questions
Can I tow a trailer behind any eBike?
No. Many bikes can tow trailers, but compatibility depends on the bike's rear axle or hitch setup, frame layout, brakes, load and intended use.
Is a child trailer better than a child seat?
It depends on the child, the bike and the riding job. A child seat is compact and mounted to the bike. A trailer gives a separate enclosed space but is longer, wider and needs towing checks.
Can a dog trailer carry cargo?
Some dog trailers can carry light cargo when used sensibly, but dog comfort and the listed total load limit come first. Do not exceed the manufacturer's limits.
